WHEELING AROUND PORTUGAL

Like many people with a Disability, finding the right Holiday abroard, with the necessary adaptions to suit our needs, can be a long drawn out task. Arriving at your destination only to find out that what you had been promised is not to your requirements, is usually always the scenario. The result is more than often, a ruined Holiday.

After a number of Holidays abroard, I finally found the perfect location with perfect Disabled facilities and aids to help our daily lifestyle. Yep, that's me in the pool !! The location was Lagos in Portugal.

Just a three hour flight from the UK, with no time difference, a whole new world awaited me and my Dad. We had arranged a hire car, which was ready and waiting for us the moment we came through Airport clearance. A 45 minute drive was all it took to reach our destination - Vivenda Dos Pinheiros.

At Vivenda Dos Pinheiros, everything a wheelchair user / Disabled person could want is on hand. The huge villa comprises of 4 ground floor studios.

Of these, two have wheel - in showers, with a shower / commode chair provided. Hand rails are correctly situated, and the sink heights are perfect. No need to worry about getting underneath them with your legs (if you are a wheelchair user like myself).

The studios have two single beds, which can be replaced for a double if you wish, a small kitchenette, and of course a fridge and cooker. A complimentary pack is also included - fruit, milk, water, bread, etc. Each villa patio opens up onto a covered terrace, perfect for a breakfast in the sun first thing in the morning. The terrace overlooks the garden and swimming pool area. The studios are accessible by a ramp. They really are Perfect.

The swimming pool is kidney shaped (7x16m) and in a completely walled - in area for privacy. Its sloping effect lets you have a swim, or, alternatively, you can sit bathing in the sun, occasionally splashing yourself to cool down. There is a poolside bar and BBQ area with fridge and sink, which is perfect for eating al fresco.

The cottage is also wheelchair accessible. There are 2 small steps, but a removable ramp makes access quick and easy, with the minimum of fuss. Inside, it is flat and open plan – the same alterations applying to the bathroom. The cottage really is breathtaking – ideal for a Family holiday or a romantic surprise.

The cottage is of timber construction, and reminded me straight away of a picturesque log cabin, remotely placed in the Swiss Alps somewhere (except there was no snow!!). Coupled with fantastic, quality furnishings, and not to forget the log fire, you will not be disappointed.
