RAINER KÜSCHALL
Founder of the company Küschall design AG (Paratec AG until 1996), Rainer
had a swimming accident at the age of 16. From this day on, he spent the next
14 years in clinics, hospitals and rehabilitation centres for social and employment
re-integration. Without pension or invalidity insurance, Rainer was dependent
on his own ideas.
Thanks to his positive attitude and never ending yearning to move ahead, he established his own company, developing his lightweight Kuschall wheelchairs that were to revolutionise the industry. With his wife's help, their apartment soon turned into a workshop to meet the growing demand for the exciting new Kuschall wheelchair designs. The production of wheelchairs quickly increased, requiring a separate assembly shop and mechanics. Throughout this time, Rainer competed in 7 Paralympics and won 19 Olympic medals, as well as setting world records.
COMPANY DEVELOPMENT
The
Küschall wheelchairs soon became a synonym for mobility and innovation.
After founding “Küschall of America” in 1986, Rainer received New York’s Museum of Modern Art’s Designer Award for his pioneering development of the Competition wheelchair. This products’s unique self supporting frame was to lead the way to modern wheelchair design.
In 1988, today’s Küschall manufacturing building in Allschwil was
inaugurated.
Küschall design joined the Invacare Group in 1995, significantly
strengthening its sales opportunities world-wide. Now renamed Invacare AG, the
company has become one of the leading manufacturers of lightweight active
wheelchairs.
